Description This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to apply the advanced tactics and strategies of golf in competitive rounds. This unit focuses on the development and performance of advanced tactics and strategies of golf to enhance competition performance.

Learning Outcomes and Application This unit applies to those who want to pursue a career in golf at a regional, state, territory or national level. Those undertaking this unit should be a scholarship holder with a regional, state, territory or national Institute of Sport, a member of a state, territory national team or squad, or a member of a second tier national competition.

Element: Participate in pre-round preparation.
  • Identify the advanced tactics and strategies of golf to be developed in consultation with the coach or mentor.
  • Analyse strengths and weaknesses of past performance.
  • Determine appropriate psychological methods and techniques commonly used at the advanced level of golf to enhance performance during pre-round preparation.
  • Develop individual tactical plans and strategies in consultation with the coach or mentor.
  • Identify the role of the coach or mentor and support staff regarding tactics for training, team preparation and competitive situations.

  • Assess the environment, and confirm it meets golf rules, regulations and policies in consultation with the coach or mentor.
  • Assess resources and equipment according to golf rules, regulations and policies.
  • Take appropriate action in response to unsuitable conditions.

  • Apply tactics and strategies to counter weaknesses and take advantage of strengths.

  • Implement identified tactical plans in a safe manner, according to golf rules, regulations and policies, relevant legislation and organisational policies and procedures.
  • Monitor and refine plans, tactics and strategies according to the stage and situation of the round.
  • Maintain effective communication with coach or mentor in order to enhance own performance.

  • Review advanced tactics and strategies implemented throughout round, and identify strengths and areas requiring improvement in consultation with the coach or mentor.

Evidence of the ability to:

utilise knowledge and interpretation of advanced tactics and strategies of golf, and relevant rules, regulations and policies of golf to develop and follow game plans, apply advanced tactics and strategies in competitive situations and analyse own performance

determine own psychological approaches and prepare to apply tactics and strategies accordingly

communicate with colleagues, coach or PGA mentor, officials and support staff throughout activities and games, and respond to feedback

monitor own performance during rounds and modify tactics and strategies to address identified issues

review own performance to identify strengths and areas requiring improvement and or modifications.

Context of and specific resources for assessment

Assessment must ensure:

performance of the advanced tactics and strategies of golf applicable to agreed plan to achieve a handicap of 3 or better for males and 6 or better for females under competition conditions over a minimum of five rounds on a minimum of three 18 hole golf courses.

Assessment must also ensure access to:

golf training and competition facilities

a coach with a minimum National Coaching Accreditation Scheme (NCAS) Level III accreditation or PGA mentor to instruct athletes

suitably qualified golfing officials and support staff:

technological aids and equipment

resources and information outlining the advanced tactics and strategies of golf

rules and regulations of golf, current legislation and organisational policies and procedures that impact on the conduct of drills, activities, games and competitions.

Method of assessment

A range of assessment methods should be used to assess practical skills and knowledge. The following examples are appropriate for this unit:

observation of performance of advanced tactics and strategies of golf during drills, activities, games and competitions

oral or written questioning to assess knowledge of relevant rules, regulations and etiquette of golf and the various advanced tactics and strategies of golf

third-party reports from coaches or PGA mentors detailing performance.
